Understanding What A Patent Is

By Business Editor

Although they may seem simple, patents can be complicated, as this article explains ...

Are you an inventor with a product that could change lives or even the economy? Then you are certainly a candidate for a patent, as it grants exclusive rights to inventors on a product or idea they have created. The invention can be just about anything you can dream up. Like many, you will want to get moving on your patent when the time is right. Although they may seem simple, patents can be complicated.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office states that three different types of patents are issued. The term for all United States patents is twenty years. The first type is a utility patent used for useful processes and composition of matter. Inventors who are working in the scientific field would hold this type of patent. The second is a design patent used for a new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture. This is the most common area that covers new product inventions. The third is a plant patent used for the invention of new varieties of plant.

Applying for a patent is a lengthy process but is easier as long as you have familiarized yourself with the three patents above. If your invention is innovative, then you should be confident to begin. First, you have to be a citizen of the United States. Corporations may have the patent signed over afterwards, by the inventor. Before filing the application with the office, visit their website at www.uspto.com and double check yourself.

Do you have a better design for a product? If that is the case, then you have to go into the nearest patent office and request permission to be the patent holder of that product. This will keep you from getting into legal trouble. With all of the facts out of the way, it is safe to say that you are ready to go in and apply for a patent. After all, it is the only thing standing in the way between you and certain fame isn't it?
