There is a lot of good patent info available for those who are looking to market their new product idea. The trouble may be in knowing where to find it. While you may be able to find an endless amount of information, can you be sure just how much of it really pertains to you. It can be difficult, especially if this is your first time looking into the procedure. What is definite is that you will need to protect yourself with perhaps a patent and trademark, so that other individuals can not lay claim to your concept.

Statistics by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office state that applications for patents jumped from 186,507 in the year 1992 to over 406,302 applications in the year 2005. In simple terms, that is a lot of patent applications. Now you may wonder, if you have been looking for patent info, how did all of these people know exactly what to do and how to go about filing for the patent? The first place that people usually begin their search is on the internet. There is an endless amount of patent and trademark information available online. An abundance of information can be found by researching U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website; www.uspto.gov.

The first step in searching for patent info should be to do a patent search to see if your idea or one that is similar has already been patented. This can be done by searching through the US. Patent and Trademark website. There are also other online resources for checking to see if a patent has been obtained for a similar idea; try doing a search for small business patents and trademarks. If you do find that your idea has already been patented or there is one that is close to the idea, then don't panic. This can actually show that there is a good market for this type of idea or invention. If this happens, take a look at your concept and determine if there are any improvements or additions that you can add to it, to turn it into a new and improved version.

Doing a search for some patent info will give you a heads up on what you need to do and where to start first. While this may seem like a bit of research and work, once you begin attempting to find a company to produce and market your product, you will really realize its importance. Many individuals have worked hard on an idea, only to have it taken from them when they attempted to talk to a person or business about what they had developed. Knowing how to get the patent application and to get the ball rolling could be the start of a whole new area of opportunity for you.
