Have you ever wondered why some entrepreneurs succeed and why some do not? Have you ever thought of the things that make enterprising individuals the best entrepreneurs in their chosen field?
For the lucky few, knowing how to start and run a business successfully might run in their veins. The truth, however, is that most people who start a business of their own have little more than a desire to start a business and lack many of the fundamental skills required to operate a business successfully. For these people (i.e. most of us), careful evaluation and extra time spent studying the nature and principles of entrepreneurship, therefore, is a must. However, this doesn’t mean that an individual who wants to become an entrepreneur should become a technical expert on all aspects of business. Knowing how to communicate their business vision to others and managing people successfully can take them just as far.
Whether you are conscious about it or not, success and failure always depend on the entrepreneur. Here are the traits of a successful entrepreneur:
Goal Oriented
Whether short term or long term, a successful entrepreneur never misses to set realistic, well-defined and achievable goals.
This trait can be developed at a very young age. For instance, a child can learn to set academic goals for themselves or set a specific timeframe to achieve something. Say, for example, the child’s parents cannot afford to buy him a toy that he or she wanted. They will try to get this toy by saving money or by finding a way to make money. When they grow up, they will have a point of reference for achieving goals and carry this trait into business. These children are more likely to become successful, since they know how to get the things they truly desire.
But it does not stop there. A successful entrepreneur knows how to review, revise and rewrite his or her goals whenever these need to be changed, adjusted or corrected.
Opportunity Seeker
An entrepreneur knows how to search for opportunities. It may be an opportunity to earn more or to learn further. Entrepreneurs will not settle for circumstances that they feels are not conducive to helping them achieve their vision and realize their goals. They know how to create new circumstances, or find new opportunities in existing situations that may not be visible for most people.
Know When To Take Advantage Of Opportunities
Once they have found an opportunity, an entrepreneur knows how to take advantage of it. Rather than act impulsively, they will spend time identifying what type of benefits the opportunity has to offer. They will ask questions such as
"Will this opportunity bring me more good than harm?"
"Is this opportunity worth the time and money I'll need to invest into it to make it work?"
"Will this opportunity help me reach my goals?"
In other words, whenever an entrepreneur is presented with an opportunity, the question he or she asks is this: "is this opportunity worth pursuing?"
Know Your Strengths And Weaknesses
Another good trait of a successful entrepreneur is knowing his or her strengths and weaknesses. This type of trait will enable an entrepreneur to define their limits and to know when to extend these limits. He or she knows the borderlines but also knows how to keep the borderlines expanding. An individual who does not know his or her strengths and weaknesses is like a person facing a mirror without clearly seeing their face. A successful entrepreneur sees his face clearly on the mirror and recognizes his imperfections and short-comings. He or she would then polish his or her imperfections, shore up his or her weaknesses and convert them to something that will benefit them, because a successful entrepreneur does not only know his or her strengths and weaknesses, they also recognize and accept these as an integral part of who they truly are.
Always Strive To Be The Best
A successful entrepreneur does not settle for the second best. He or she always finds ways how to be the best in their craft. By taking inventory of their strengths and weaknesses, they can achieve what others might not. Entrepreneurs pay meticulous attention to detail and quality. They are guided by principles of excellence and would as much as possible like to treat all customers the same.
Enjoy What You Do And Enjoy Life Too
Successful entrepreneurs loves their work and they also enjoy taking a break from work to enjoy the good things that life has to offer. They would not be successful if they did not enjoy their business. At the same time, they do not make their business their life. Successful entrepreneurs strive for a balanced life and know how to rest once in a while to enjoy life itself.
Know When To Ask For Help
A successful entrepreneur recognizes that they cannot do everything themselves or succeed alone. They learn to recognize when they have taken on too much and may need a hand in order to get things done right. They also learn how to get along with people and respect and appreciate another person's point of view on matters regarding their business. They do this to minimize the risk of making mistakes. A successful entrepreneur has a clear vision of what they want to achieve and learns to identify the right type of people for the job.
