Reasons To Attend Entrepreneur University

While there are some people that will argue that many of the world's most successful entrepreneurs have no business diploma, or that some of them are even school dropouts, the statistics stacked for not succeeding in business are still staggering ...

So, why should you consider enrolling at an entrepreneurial University?

One of the first reasons to consider going back to business school, is because in today's business landscape, running a business requires well-honed knowledge, skills and more than just capital, ideas and stamina, that's why.

While there are some people that will argue that many of the world's most successful entrepreneurs have no business diploma, or that some of them are even school dropouts, the statistics stacked for not succeeding in business are still staggering. Even the best of ideas in the best people will from time to time need some sanity checking. You will find this out to be true in the future whether you have already succeeded or, like the majority of aspiring entrepreneurs, have met with failures and insurmountable obstacles. So, why take chances.

True, there are the so-called intangibles in a person that can help him or her succeed at business as though possessing the fabled "Midas touch," or some other extraordinary quality that you may not be able to put a finger on. Having unique individual qualities and a certain personality type are an important prerequisite for anyone thinking of conducting a business successfully. But then again, entrepreneurship can be taught and learned, and just like creativity, it can be developed and honed to help you reach higher levels and to explore your full business potential.

The entrepreneurial landscape is not easy. It is pock-marked and dotted with failures and this includes many of those who were passionate about what they were doing. Business is a highly competitive and dynamic force, made more complicated by fast changing technologies that have the power to render today's processes and methods obsolete by tomorrow. One of the strongest arguments about not succeeding in entrepreneurship points out to the amount or the lack of investment in oneself, i,e, personal development. The question then, is not whether to enroll at an Entrepreneurial University, but rather which field of endeavor you should be getting into.

You may or may not need an MBA, but you could seldom get away nowadays without training on basic managerial accounting and finance, strategic positioning, technological trends, business law, business planning, negotiation, business statistics and economics, marketing, product development and to a degree, global trends to name some of the essential skills required.

Some of these areas require so much attention that you would probably need someone with more experience to help you, such as a tutor or mentor. Take for example a simple business plan.

A business plan is the blue print that describes how a business is to be conducted. Whether the intention is to present the plan to a banker or not, the principle is the same. It needs special attention to details. So many times, someone doing a business plan will be so focused on achieving the bigger picture, that they will forget to include vital details explain the exact methods through which the plan will achieve the goals. Other times, the information is so generic, that nothing substantial will really have been communicated and there will be nothing to follow in the plan. All of this can be detected and remedied, either by a trained and experienced professional, or. better yet, by investing a little of your time and effort in business training and education.

Creativity too is an essential attribute for running a successful venture. Now what is that? Creativity is the bulb that lights up a path. It is fun and it is what makes your approach and solutions unique. We all have it in varying degrees but it is an accepted fact that for most of us who want more of it, creativity could be developed faster in an atmosphere where there is an exchange of ideas and interaction. A "Mastermind" so to speak.

These are just two critical aspects of running a business. Other areas you should develop a working knowledge of  include setting up systems and processes, understanding legal structures, managing finance and cash flow, reporting and record keeping, setting up quality control and methods for monitoring standards and benchmarks, etc.

Fortunately, many Entrepreneurial Universities now exist that provide flexible units of study, allowing you to structure the course to suit your immediate and practical requirements, while also being specific enough to accommodate your needs.

Some areas of study that are critical to running a business and are generally offered by all good entrepreneurial universities may include:

  • Advertising
  • Basic Bookkeeping
  • Basic Business Management
  • Basic Financing
  • Business Financial Management
  • Business Planning
  • Choosing a name
  • Choosing people
  • Equipment and supplies
  • Financial resources
  • Insurance
  • Legal structure
  • Marketing
  • Operations and Production Management
  • Public Relations
  • Record keeping
  • Sales and
  • Startup Processes

These often provide additional training on:

  • Accounting/Taxation
  • Building a Culture/Team
  • Building Your Company's Vision
  • Coaching
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Crisis Management
  • Initial Public Offerings
  • Growth management
  • Negotiation
  • Networking
  • Personnel and Compensation
  • Product Development
  • Strategy
  • Technology and applications and
  • Venture Capital

This may sound like a long list, but as mentioned previously, often these courses have modules that can be adapted to individual requirements.

If you feel that further business training or study can improve your skills as a business entrepreneur, a good place to start searching is online. Remember, having a University degree is not a prerequisite for success in business, but the desire and willingness to continually invest in one's own personal development through learning, training and development is.
