Entrepreneurs review their businesses often, even though many already know their ventures like the back of their hands. This article explains some of the reasons why ...
When you own a business, it is only natural that you try to examine it. We all know that the more information you have about something, the bigger your chances are for making correct decisions about it.
Entrepreneurs review their businesses often, even though many already know their ventures like the back of their hands. When you think about it, the cliché "knowing the back of your hand" is a bit false. In fact, only a few of us really know how the back of our hands look like. We only think we know it because we see it every day. However, we also take that view for granted and very few of us can actually honestly say that we have memorized every detail of the back of our hands.
How does that connect with how entrepreneurs scan and review their businesses? Well, most entrepreneurs nowadays want to believe that they know every detail of their business ventures. But the truth is, very few actually do.
You see, there are some significant disadvantages to being "the boss."
For one thing, the boss always seems to be out of the grapevine. This means that the boss hardly ever gets wind of any trouble that goes on around the workplace. It also means that there may be some problems that the boss will not be able to know about, unless the entrepreneur scans his environment.
So how should entrepreneurs scan their environments? Well, a good idea is not to act like a drill sergeant and start shouting down your employees in order to get the answers or results you need. This is known as "gopher management" ("go for this ... now go for that!"). One negative aspect of this type of management is that it shows that you mistrust your employees and robs them of their ability to act with self-initiative. This is a sure way of ensuring that they keep you "out of the loop", so to speak. Another thing is that you cannot expect to get the information you want this way. By intimidating your employees, you will only get the information you want to hear, not the information you need to hear.
You should behave in a way that allows your employees to feel that they can trust you. Be one of the guys. However, make sure that you don't cross the professional boundaries that exist in every workplace. You should show your employees that you are the kind of person whom they can come to for any problem. Remember that any small problem of your employees can affect the way you do your business.
Okay, so we have briefly touched on the proper way entrepreneurs should scan their businesses regarding their staff and employees. But there are, of course, other factors that need to be scrutinized in order to have a successful venture.
You also need to assess yourself. What kind of entrepreneur are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? How well do you handle the business and everything else that the world throws at you?
Remember that sometimes, we are not the best judge of our own characters. Most entrepreneurs scan their personal qualities and attributes by getting an outside opinion. This opinion, of course should not be biased in order to be helpful to you. You need to have someone tell you to your face what your shortcomings and weaknesses as a businessperson are, and also give you due you credit for your abilities, skills, strengths and talents.
Entrepreneurs also scan their business environment. What potential new markets are becoming available for your business? What can threaten your business in the short, medium and long term? Will a change of government create a better climate for your business to thrive in and prosper, or will it take away some of your current benefits and concessions? How will the new highway being proposed by the local community affect sales in your retail outlet? Will the new safety regulations being introduced later this month create an additional layer of bureaucracy or require you to employ and train more staff? Entrepreneurs constantly scan their environment because of the fact that it is the one factor that they often cannot control about their business.
All you can do when something in the environment, whether opportunity or threat, takes place is to adapt to it. This means that you have to be able to prepare for any contingency. It is necessary to plan in order to succeed. But you know that, right?
Entrepreneurs scan the market for any signs of behavioral changes that could mean the collapse of their business. Why do you think that chips and sodas develop different flavors all the time? People change all the time. One example is change of preference. If a market gets tired of your product, you would be in very big trouble.
You need to adapt your product to present trends. Anticipate future changes and do your best to prepare for these. However, you also need to remember your past. Sometimes, people dislike changes that a company or product goes through and, as a result, they take their business elsewhere. Ensure the continuing legacy of a good product if you think you have one, by paying attention to the fundamentals of planning, marketing, and customer relations and continually reviewing all areas of your business as you search for new ways to improve, innovate or orchestrate your business operations..
