Any business that keeps a close eye on the bottom line in order to be profitable and competitive is most likely aware of the many benefits of using outsourced services. Utilizing business process outsourcing can shore up just about any operational need in a business and provide a positive means of cost containment, as well as providing a great deal of flexibility in terms of capacity.

Outsourcing in business is done for a number of different reasons, which can be one or more of the following: to increase shareholder value to reduce costs, to foster business transformation, to streamline and improve operations, to overcome lack of internal capacity and capabilities, to keep up with the competition, to gain competitive advantages, to increase sales, to expand and improve service, to mitigate capital investments, to improve cash flow and many other benefits, both tangible and intangible.

Some of the most common areas where business process outsourcing is used are in what are considered the "non-core" or ancillary functions. Typical examples of these types of non-core functions that lend themselves to outsourced services are: accounting, legal service, human resources management, marketing and sales, customer support, information technology, manufacturing, strategic sourcing, logistics and distribution.

It should also be noted that non-core versus core business processing will differ by company and also by industry. For instance, an accounting firm might outsource projects that relate to marketing or to their information technology infrastructure, but would most likely have their own business accounting needs taken care of in-house as opposed to being outsourced. Likewise, a manufacturing firm might turn to HR outsourcing, for their human resources needs, while retaining complete control of all manufacturing processes.

This ability to focus on the true core of the business is another of the highly important and very strategic aspects of business outsourcing. Outsourcing the non-core functions, which are still needed and critical for a business to function, allows the company to put the majority of its focus on improving the key functions and processes which can give them additional competitive advantages in the marketplace.

This means that a research and development firm can dedicate the skills, talents, abilities and experience of the entire management team and staff to furthering their projects. This allows the team to make the most of their strengths, as they hone their expertise and place the burden of other, less productive functions on the business process outsourcing companies, which can focus on sharpening their strengths as well.

When done well, and with the proper due diligence put into place when selecting outsourced services, business process outsourcing can be a very powerful practice. It can help companies to be more empowered by increasing their focus and their expertise in a given field, while allowing each provider of the outsourced services to do likewise.
