If you are a nurse, has it ever occurred to you that you could start a business of your own? Most nurses are surprisingly entrepreneurial. While some nursing graduates are confident enough to face the challenges of being in business by themselves, there are also those who wonder as to whether or not they will be able to handle it. Nurses are often faced with the question: “Has my nursing course or medical education prepared and molded me to be successful in my nursing career practice?” Of course you must think positively. The world of nursing is filled with lessons which you can always take credit for.
After graduation, most nursing students look for opportunities to gain practical experience. As you practice your nursing career further and build up knowledge and expertise, you should be able to recognize entrepreneurial opportunities that you can seize as as way of starting your own business. All you have to do is learn to recognize the many possibilities that can turn you into a nurse entrepreneur.
Here, then, are some tips that will help you become a great nurse entrepreneur ...
First, find out what area of medical practice your real passion is aligned with and start researching business opportunities in that area. Not all nurses envision themselves growing old in hospitals while taking care of critically-ill patients. After some years of employment experience in a hospital, most nurses diversify their focus into areas other than caring for their patients.
As a nursing graduate, you can look for teaching jobs. Why not? After all, you can always share your knowledge to others. If you’ve got the funds, why don’t you spend it on building a legal nurse consultancy business?
Other entrepreneurial ventures you might want to consider are:
Medical Research / Health-Related Article Writing - there is a growing demand for competent article writers in the fields of health, medicine, alternative medicine, illness and disease prevention, treatments, medical conditions, parenting, pregnancy, caring for the mentally ill, and so on. You can set up an article membership site and provide valuable content for health-related websites, either by writing the material yourself, or outsourcing to other writers, then supervising the finished product to make sure that it is accurate and well-researched.
Parenting / Childbirth Classes - When my wife and I were expecting our first child, we enrolled in a class for expectant parents run by a trained nurse. Basically, the nurse hired a communal facility after hours and with the help of anatomical props, videos and her own expertise, taught would-be parents how to prepare for the birth of their child.
Public Health Education Courses - Following from the above ideas, if you have experience and qualifications in any medical area that the general public could benefit from, you have the ability to set up your own lecturing, training programs. Some examples would be:
Caring for mentally ill children, parents or loved ones, caring for Alzheimer's patients, or patients with senile dementia.
Diagnosing symptoms and treatment of common childhood illnesses.
Healthy living for seniors, diabetics, heart attack survivors, etc ...
General safety and prevention
Gaining maximum benefit of medical insurance plans
As you can see, there are many opportunities for coaching, teaching, and mentoring others in various health-related areas of interest. If you are an aspiring nurse entrepreneur, start working on your plan now and build up the experience, skills and knowledge you'll need when it's time to venture out on your own later.
