Writing A Company History

By Business Editor

In this article, we provide a number of useful tips about writing a company history ...

There is no single formula for researching and writing a company history; writers use many different processes, and of course, write in many different styles. Most do agree, however, that the research should be started at least one year before the scheduled publication date. Time is needed not just for research, but also for writing and editing, design, picture selection and production. Most feel that if the company's history is complex or lengthy, then a two-year, or more, start is preferable.

Many times, a company will have compiled archival materials and would like for you to work primarily from them. While archival materials are important, interviews can be very valuable in portraying a human dimension to the history of the company and provides great anecdotes too.

Interviewing people can be a valuable asset and source of information when you are completing your research for a company history. The number of interviews will of course be determined by the size and length of time a company has been in business. It is a good idea to begin the interviews as soon as possible because often times these interviews will provide valuable insights into the company. Some people may also be able to provide documents or photographs, which you will be able to use when completing the history.

When you are contacting people to arrange for interviews, be sure to describe the subject and the company project that you will be working on so that they may check their calendar and be sure to have the necessary time to prepare. Be sure to review all of your relevant documents and other materials prior to the interview. Before meeting the person, think about the most important information you need and consider them as five to ten subject bullets, to help guide the interview.

As for the actual interview, be relaxed and friendly and be specific in your questions, as it is good to ask for details and to satisfy your curiosity. Many times, joint interviews work well, especially if the individuals are friends or close to each other and have shared experiences important to a company history. Whether you are doing single or joint interviews, be sure to sum up the major points of the interview. This often prompts additional information because the individual feels more relaxed when the interview is "over." Many times a thought will come to them as you are walking out the door or getting into your car, so be prepared to spend additional time if it is needed.
